I have been trying to think of a way to write about this adventure without making it seem like we are the kind of people who have portraits made of their dogs. Unfortunately, we are that kind of people, and there’s no way to sugarcoat it.
That’s how we ended up in San Francisco a couple of weeks ago (a mere 4-hour drive EACH WAY) at a little studio in the Mission District. We had booked the photo shoot about nine months ago, and I may have secretly thought we would not actually follow through. But we did.
Shooting the shooter
Please don't embarrass us.
Bonnie was blase.
Barkley was the explorer.
All the dogs were groomed and primped the day before, and then on The Day, we were up early for the long drive. There was jockeying for position in the back seat the whole way, and of course somebody barfed, even though I had beseeched them to save that for the trip home. Once we got to the shoot, though, they were pros, posing for almost 250 photos in 90 minutes.
The photographer was the oh so fabulous Amanda Jones, who speaks fluent Dog, meows like a cat, and mostly seems to simply charm her subjects into looking their best. When NPR paid a visit to one of her shoots, Amy Costello said her photographs are works of art: “Think Annie Leibovitz, only with dogs.”
Bonnie acted like a grown-up, of course, but even Brooklyn and Barkley were good as gold. There was no inappropriate peeing, pooping, barfing or bloodshed in the studio.
Which is more than you can say for the girls on America’s Next Top Model.

I will never judge you for being this kind of dog owner. As long as you don’t judge me for being the kind of mother who never has her daughters’ portraits done. So much work! You’re a good mommy.

No inappropriate peeing, pooping, barfing or bloodshed? Impressive. Maybe Amanda should take her talents to kindergarden…

I can’t wait to see the finished photographs! Can’t believe they behaved – go pups! I’m pretty sure there would have been at least one of those inappropriate acts if our dogs were involved. Pruett has a habit of pooping at the worst times on a regular basis. Sigh…

Your babies are beautiful! I agree with Abby. You are a good Mommy.
I’d love to have my kids shot, but there would be bloodshed. With 4 boys, I think there always will be….sigh.

I can’t even get one of my cats to let me pet her. I’m thinking a photo shoot is out of the question.

Awww, such well behaved kids you have!! I can’t wait to see more pictures!! The poor photographer would have to be on the run with the camera if I attempted to get Beaux’s taken. He just is so darn naughty! He needs to come to Kathi’s school of well behaved kids;) (may have to send my 7 year old along too;)

Since I’ve gone into the future and have read your follow up post, I can see why your photog is referred to as “Think Annie Leibovitz, only with dogs.”. And from NPR no less. I wouldn’t even be able to get Mad magazine to pinch me out a quote for anything. Not that I’ve done anything.

Amazing! They look so beautiful and well behaved. Put a really big framed shot up near the kitchen door so you can be reminded “I DO love my dogs I DO love my dogs I DO I DO I DO” next time they bring roadkill in the house.
