Christmas songs. Let’s discuss. But first, I throw down the lyrics to an all-time great Christmas song by Robert Earl Keen.
Merry Christmas from the Family
Mom got drunk and Dad got drunk at our Christmas party
We were drinking champagne punch and homemade egg nog
Little sister brought her new boyfriend
He was a Mexican, we didn’t know what to make of him
’til he sang Feliz Navidad
Brother Ken brought his kids with him
The three from his first wife Lynn
and the two identical twins from his second wife Mary Nell
Of course he brought his new wife Kay, who talks all about AA
Chain smokin’ while the stereo plays Noel, Noel, the First Noel
Carve the turkey, turn the ball game on
Mix margaritas when the egg nog’s gone
Send somebody to the QuikPak store
We need some ice and an extension cord
a can of bean dip and some Diet Rite
a box of tampons and some Marlboro Lights
Hallelujah everybody say CHEESE
Merry Christmas from the family
Fran and Rita drove from Harlingen
I can’t remember how we’re kin to them
but when they tried to plug their motorhome in
they blew our Christmas lights
Cousin David knew just what went wrong
so we all waited on our front lawn
He threw a breaker and the lights came on
and we sang Silent Night
Carve the turkey, turn the ball game on
Make bloody marys ’cause we all want one
Send somebody to the Stop-n-Go
We need celery and a can of fake snow
a bag of lemons and some Diet Sprite
A box of tampons and some Salem Lights
Hallelujah, everybody say CHEESE
Merry Christmas from the family

I have never heard this particular song, and even though I totally disrespected it yesterday, Oh Holy Night is far and away my favorite. Especially when a full choir sings it. I get weepy every year at mass when the huge church choir sings it.
Don’t tell anyone I get weepy.
Karen’s last blog post..Can you smell it, because I sure can
I think Robert Earl Keen might have looked into my soul when he wrote that song.
For some reason, my favorite Christmas song is Last Christmas by Wham! Not George Michael, but Wham!
I don’t know why. I love a boppy Christmas break-up song, I guess.
I just heard this the other night on “Larry the Cable Guy’s Christmas Special”. They also sang ,”Silent Fart at Walmart” (to the tune of silent night). It was a great show.
I love all christmas songs, but I think Barbara Streissand singing “Jingle bells” gets me laughing really hard!
Lola…again’s last blog post..In case you were wonderring…
What is up with Neil Diamond (AKA The Jewish Elvis) singing Christmas songs? I don’t get that at all.

I love Robert Earl Keen. In that semi-anti Yule vein, also check out “Even Santa Gets the Blues” by Marty Stuart. And “Please Daddy Don’t Get Drunk at Christmas.” Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison, a great couple by the way.
Merriest of Christmases!!!
