We learned in our puppy classes that no matter what problem behavior our dogs exhibit, if we search their environment and background, we can find what caused it.
Dogs are a lot like people that way.
My friend Susan has more clothes than anybody I know. Even though her closets are bursting at the seams, she usually buys a new outfit for every occasion. At least she has started wearing colors. For a long time, she wore a lot of red and black. She would show me her new pair of sandals and I’d say, “Cute! They look a lot like all the rest of your red sandals.” Or, “Nice pants! They remind me of your other black pants, and the other black pants, and those other ones, you know, the black ones.”
It isn’t really her fault, though. Just like with the dogs, all you have to do is dig a little, and you can find the cause of this behavior.
Back when Susan was a young mother of a toddler, her mother was in the hospital and not doing well. One day Susan got a call saying she should get to the hospital ASAP. She quickly located a neighbor to watch her tot, and headed for the hospital without delay. She didn’t even run a comb through her hair, let alone think about changing out of her pedal pushers and t-shirt.
Her mother was sleeping when Susan arrived at her bedside. She looked feverish and tired. Susan took her hand and began to pat it. In a moment, her mother slowly opened one bloodshot eye, and seeing Susan hovering there, said,
“Good lord, Susan, what are you wearing?”

A bad outfit is a great way to get attention from a mother or a grandmother. I’m convinced that they could be in a complete coma and come out long enough to gasp in horror at your get up.
