I come from a long line of Irish worriers. We always expect the worst and we never trust the best, because something bad is waiting just around the next corner. If you have this kind of heritage, you have to drink a lot (Hello, Irish!) or develop good denial skills. Having tried both, I am sticking with denial, because the hangovers are less painful.
That is why, when Bonnie got very scarily sick about a month ago, you didn’t see a word about it here. I wouldn’t dare write it down and make it “real.” She had to spend a few days hospitalized, and at the beginning her prognosis was grim. In fact, one of her (many) vets said we needed to hope for a miracle.
Well. Within a few days, Bonnie’s test results started to improve and she was able to come home. Then over the next few weeks, her appetite gradually returned, her mood brightened, and she had the energy to smack the puppies around when they intruded on her snack time. In short, she became our Bonnie again.
Yesterday was her latest follow-up veterinarian visit, and her “numbers” now confirm what we have been witnessing–everything is normal, yay! She has a doctor who is an even bigger worrier than I am, and he wants to see her for more follow-ups, but he is giving her a month off, so she can celebrate her 14th birthday and Christmas without being poked, scanned, and examined.
Meanwhile, she gets to wear all her stylish sweaters, to keep her tummy warm (it was shaved for the ultrasounds).

Good girl, Bonnie! Who’s a good miracle doggie? You are! That’s right! Bonnie’s a good miracle doggie, yes she is!
(When you read that, you have to use a doggy-talk voice or else it just seems weird.)

Bonnie’s going to be really mad at you when she grows up, when you show her that photo of her in the sweater….

Denial is a great tool. I use it often and everything works perfectly in the end.. . .
OK there I go again in denial! I’m so glad to hear that Bonnie is the miracle dog! I’m sure she was worried about leaving you alone with those pups and the fact that she hasn’t smacked them around enough yet. Go Bonnie!
Bonnie! Don’t you go worrying us like that! Those puppies are cute but, you’ll always be the favorite. I could eat that sweet little Bonnie face. Smooches!

The vet said to start giving Lucky antibiotics cuz he has blood in his urine. And if it doesn’t clear up, THEN he’ll xray for bladder stones. Didn’t we go down this trail three years ago when Lucky nearly DIED from a blocked bladder and two surgeries for it? Why, YES WE DID!!
So in the morning, I’m taking Lucky back to the vet and demanding: BEFORE we give him antibiotics (which tear up his tummy) USE YOUR DAMN XRAY MACHINE NOW!!!
Glad YOU have a good vet. I love Bonnie. I love Lucky. Don’t think I could do it again though.
