Back to the V.P.

The Vegetable Palace, as we call it, delivered a lot of good stuff this summer. Now that we have had a few freezing nights, I harvested everything I could find. Here are the end of the tomatoes (which were abundant and delicious this year!):

A lot of them are already ripening, but I do want to make some fried green tomatoes to try. I never got around to it early in the season when I thought they would never ripen. We got a big harvest of cucumbers, several cantaloupes and watermelons, lots of peppers and eggplants and beans, carrots and herbs.

Mainly, I learned a lot about how to do it better next year. The way I planted the tomatoes required that I had to suit up like Indiana Jones to reach them for harvesting when everything was big, and the cucumbers threatened the safety of the entire neighborhood with the size of the rambling vines.

Now the huge job will be to clean up all the remaining vines and get some winter crops planted. (sigh) A woman’s work is never done.

I love the fact that you feel the need to rub those tomatoes in my face. I’m happy for you that you have enough tomatoes to feed a not so small country and I had three. Three! And they were terrible. Yep, couldn’t be happier for you!

I will be cursing your Vegetable Palace as I am hunched over our garden, replanting with winter crops this weekend.

Dip pinkish green tomato slices into flour, then into egg/buttermilk mixture. Dredge in PANKO (chinese “crumbs” that are extra crispy). Forget about cornmeal for the crunch. Panko is fantastic.

I can get you my address and you could overnight some of those. I’d hate tot hink that they were going to go to waste because unless you plan to eat tomatos everyday all day for the next week, that just might happen. That’s an assload of tomatos, sorry toe

Is it okay that I’m jealous of your life? I live in an apartment in the middle of the city and I want fresh eggs, my own hand-picked vegetables, and a compost heap. If those tomatoes were mine I would eat them like candy.

That does look like something you would get from a palace! I love tomatoes and you have the jackpot there! Enjoy! (After you work really hard of course;)

Lucky devil! I love home grown tomatoes but this year .. pah! it was too wet and too dull in the uk for even green tomatoes! Slugs got any that did manage to turn a mild shade of orange. Lucky YOU! Green Tomato chutney is pretty good too. x

Hey, wait until I harvest my parsley. It will put your tomatoes to shame! Bacon, lettuce and parsley sandwich, anyone? Spaghetti and parsley sauce? Creamy parsley soup? Fried green parsley? Yeah, that’s the ticket!

Meltrier October 22, 2008 at 9:22 pm
