Would you like fries with this catch-up?

by Kathi D on May 15, 2008

I’m taking a break from the True Tales of the Family today to catch up on a few current doings around the Funny Farm. Also tomorrow’s entry, the last in this particular series, is going to take some word pictures that I haven’t developed yet.

Meanwhile, I am finally declaring a WINNER in my name-those-chickens who may or may not be roosters contest. The winner is, TA-DA!! Diana, who suggested Del and Mel, because she knows a married couple with those names and she can never remember which is which. I love that story, and so Del and Mel they are! I will be sending Diana a prize that may or may not suck, so I’m sure she is trembling with anticipation.

Also, I haven’t shown you a picture of the girls (and boys) in their coop yet. They are loving it, except I don’t know if I have the dumbest chicks in the world or the stubbornest or what, but they aren’t marching into the henhouse at dark like I thought every chicken in the world does. I have to catch them and put them in, which is pretty much guaranteed to keep me scratched up for the rest of my life, or at least the rest of theirs. It’s warm out tonight, so I just left them alone to stretch out all over the coop-yard, and if they freeze to death, I refuse to blame myself. Since it’s 60F degrees outside at 2 a.m. I doubt they will actually freeze to death. But do I have to serve barbecued pork ribs and mealworms to lure them inside or what?

Then there is the Mystery Building Project. I’m mainly trying to torment SIL Margarita (Not Her Real Name) with this photo. I told her that Big Red (Not His Real Nickname) the landscape designer guy, is working on something but I didn’t say what. She guessed a swimming pool. Sorry, no. Anybody have a guess what this thing is going to be?

Finally, I have to thank My Brother Bob (His Real Name) for not sending a Hit Man for me (you haven’t, right, Bob?) for using that photo. In fact, he left a good comment about it:

hand-me-downs: sometimes good, sometimes not.

It’s nice to know he hasn’t lost his delicate sense of humor. The brother who fits so nicely into Mom’s bra (dang, Mom must have been SKINNY for an 8-year-old to fit her bra!) died way too young so he can’t complain about my use of embarrassing photos.

I think the surprise buiding is a potting shed. You wi utilize it when you need to make deicate little seedinglings, or decompose the flesh of an intruder, which ever comes first!

I think the chicks are spoiled like kids and it may require candy to lure them in? Just a thought. I wish that our lows were 60 degrees. those are the highs around here!

The building is going to be a fancy pergola, where you will sit and sip your tea and read Oprah while watching your chicks (including Mel & Del) out in the yard galavanting around? Was I close?

That coop is SO well constructed and SO nice!! Take it from another country girl, that coop is the RITZ!

As for the patio/thingie: it will be a brick bar-b-que, just to keep the chickens in line. But, it should be an outside Bar with a stripper pole in the middle, although for my taste, as nice workshed.

love the coop and the way you write. Aren’t chickens fun? My suggestion for getting them into the coop comes from backyardchickens.com. They say to lock them in the coop for a couple of days and nights to let it sink into their tiny brains that this is their home. They’ll get used to it and then go in naturally and easily at night. Feeding at night works also! Do you keep a lightbulb on for them?

Ok time to let everyone in on the “secret” building. It’s a house for me. I’m moving onto the property and going to become a full time student of weaving human hair ponchos. I will also tend to the chickens. My job is to sleep in the coop with them at night so they won’t be scared. It really is a dream come true for me as I don’t have very big dreams. Thank you Kathi, for making dreams come true.

Well, I am certain we were sisters or something, in another life. I just came across your blog last night, and am already in need of rehab. As for your chickens, we had a dozen turkeys that would not bed down in the coop, a few years back. They preferred to roost on an old farm truck instead. This was great because all the poop was contained in the back. Cleaning the coop simply meant driving the truck to a suitable location and shovelling it off of the back. Only problem was, once the turkeys were bedded down in the freezer, we couldn’t get the truck started. I posted a picture for you on my blog “The Barn’s on Fire, The Horses are Out, and Someone has a Stinky Bum”. You can find it in the right hand column. If you should make it over there, please, check out “A typical Mother’s Day”, and “The Value of a Good Fence”. I think you will see what I mean about the sisters thing. I must say, I am extremely thankful that this site was posted on Bugs N Bunnies. Rednecks can’t just be found at mud boggs, rodeos and wrestling matches anymore, they’ve also invaded cyber space.

Toi, I begged you not to brag about that.

I have now locked the chickens into the coop where they will remain for the next three days while Rick and I and the dogs go away for the weekend. This way I won’t succumb to their pitiful cries and let them out.

I swear, I am finding separated-at-birth twins all over the internet. As if I didn’t already have enough wacky relatives.
